EXECUTIVE SUMMARY – FINDINGS OF PAHAYAG NCR POLL

STATE OF THE NATION

When asked about the country’s direction, 55% said that they are somewhat dissatisfied with the direction of the country. Most of the dissatisfied respondents come from the upper class segment.
In general, 57% think that the economic condition of the country is getting better. This perception is prominent in Class ABC and the 18-24 age group, at 72% and 66%, respectively. Almost half of the respondents from Class D and E think that the economic condition is getting worse.

40% of the respondents paid more attention to politics since Rodrigo Duterte was elected as President. Going deeper into the demographics, more people from Class ABC since Duterte became President.

Awareness Ratings

President Rodrigo Duterte has the highest awareness rating at 99%. This is followed by Senate President Vicente Sotto III, House Speaker Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, Vice President Maria Leonor Robredo have the highest awareness rating in Class D and E. Acting Chief Justice Antonio T. Carpio has the lowest awareness rating among the five officials.

Trust and Approval Ratings

President Rodrigo Duterte enjoys high trust and approval ratings. He gets his highest approval rating from Class ABC and highest trust rating from the 18 – 24 years old age bracket.  Senate President Vicente Sotto III enjoys higher trust and approval ratings than Vice President Maria Leonor Robredo. Trust for Leni Robredo is highest with the 35-44 years old age bracket. The 18-24 years old age bracket has the least trust for Senate President Vicente Sotto.

Although House Speaker Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo’s has slightly higher trust and approval ratings than Acting Chief Justice Antonio Carpio, the latter enjoys higher ratings in the Class ABC.

Decisiveness Rating

PRRD got the highest decisiveness rating in NCR, at 84%. His decisiveness rating in Class ABC and the age 18-24 years old bracket is higher than average, at 90% and 898%, respectively. Senate President Tito Sotto, whose decisiveness rating is 5%, gets 8% decisiveness rating in the 55 years old and above age bracket.

Trust in Institutions

Business and government enjoy the highest trust ratings, at 65% and 63%, respectively. Between the uniformed personnel, the military has higher trust ratings than the police. The latter has the lowest trust rating. Media, second to the least trusted institution, has consistent trust ratings across demographics. Trust ratings for government, military and police are highest with Class ABC and the 18-24 years old age bracket.

Most of those who have big trust for businesses and NGOs are respondents who have never worked.

Trust in Media Outlets

TV stations have higher trust ratings than most media outlets, especially ABS-CBN and GMA. Among the radio stations, DZMM, DZBB, and DZRH are the most trusted outlets.

Broadsheets and tabloids are the least trusted media by the voters. PDI and Manila Bulletin have the highest trust ratings among the broadsheets. At least 40% of the voters in NCR do not trust tabloids. At least 50% still do not get news from search engines and online-only media.

At least a third of the respondents do not get news from social media. But among the social media platforms, Facebook has the highest trust rating.

National Interest

The decision of the International Court of Justice on the West Philippine Sea, working closely with ASEAN to achieve common goals and vision, remaining a close friend of Japan, and remaining a friend or ally of the Americans are considered as national interest by at least 80% of the respondents.

Majority, especially the Class ABC, think that we are better off with an independent foreign policy.
68% think that China is a threat to the Philippines. Majority think that the US and Japan respect the Philippines.

Awareness of Countries

The US has the overall highest awareness rating at 94% but China has a higher rating in Class DE (93%).Respondents who have never worked have a high regard for Philippine – US relations.
Although the respondents have a favorable opinion of Japan, only around 20% across demographics think that Japan is an important ally.

68% think that China is a threat to the Philippines. Moreover, 85% of the respondents who have never worked think that China is a threat.  Among the respondents, Class ABC has highest regard for China (46%).

NCR respondents have a lukewarm perception of Spain in general. 43% of the respondents think that 55% of the 45 years old and above thinks Spain respects the Philippines. Class ABC has the most favorable opinion of Spain.

39% of the respondents have a very favorable opinion of Russia. 44% think that Russia respects the Philippines. Across demographics, the 55 years old and above group has the least positive perception of Russia.

41% of the respondents have a very favorable opinion of India. 46% think that Russia respects the Philippines. Across demographics, the 55 years old and above group has the least positive perception of India.

More than half of the respondents have a positive perception of Australia and its relations with the Philippines, especially Class ABC and the 18-24 years old age bracket. Across demographics, the 55 years old and above group has the least positive perception of Australia.

Third Telco

More than half think that a company controlled by China should not operate as 3rd telco in the country. This sentiment is most prevalent in the 55 years old and above age group.

China and Oil

74% think that China should not be given a role in developing our oil and mineral resources. But across demographics, Class ABC is more open than most to giving China that role.
