Filipinos Maintain Optimism for Country’s State and Economic Prospects – PAHAYAG Survey

Manila, June 22, 2023 — The latest PAHAYAG survey, conducted by PUBLiCUS Asia Inc., has revealed that Filipinos continue to hold a positive outlook on the state of the country and its economic prospects.

The said survey assessed the state of the country, national economic outlook, and household financial outlook. It was observed that perceptions of the national economy and household finances remained steady in both Q1 and Q2. Respondents expressed optimism regarding the current state (51%) and direction (68%) of the country, as well as the national economy (69%) and financial prospects (70%). Notably, government workers demonstrated the most improved views.

The 18-24-year-old and Non-working demographic expresses growing dissatisfaction with the country’s state, direction, and economic prospects. Limited educational and employment opportunities contribute to their negative sentiments, fostering a sense of disillusionment.

Despite an overall positive sentiment of 67% towards the state of the Philippines for the 2023 Third Quarter, certain segments of the population have experienced a significant shift towards negative sentiments. The 18-24-year-old age group (61% in Q1 to 53% in Q2), non-Catholics (71% in Q1 to 63% in Q2), other workers (73% in Q1 to 66% in Q2) individuals with no formal education (69% in Q1 to 55% in Q2), and vocational workers (75% in Q1 to 69% in Q2) have shown a decline in positivity. Similarly, the North-Central Luzon region witnessed a decrease in positive sentiment, falling from 71% in the first quarter to 66% in the second quarter.

However, it is noteworthy that there has been a significant increase in positive sentiments among the 25-29-year-old age group and government workers. Monitoring these shifting sentiments will be crucial in understanding the evolving perceptions and concerns of different demographic segments in the country.

The PAHAYAG 2023 Second Quarter Survey (PQ2) is an independent and non-commissioned survey conducted by PUBLiCUS Asia Inc. between 7-12 June 2023. It is a nationwide purposive survey with 1,500 respondents randomly drawn from a market research panel of over 200,000 Filipinos maintained by PureSpectrum, a US-based panel marketplace with a multinational presence with respondents, and distributed across five geographical areas: National Capital Region (NCR), North Central Luzon (NCL), South Luzon (SL), Visayas (Vis), and Mindanao (Min). Only registered Filipino voters were included in the sample, ensuring that the results accurately represent the sentiments of the voting population.
